Jewish in Germany – How we see ourselves

On this special film evening we will show three films on the Jewish self-image.

Under the title “How we see ourselves” (conceived by Avery Gosfield), Matthias Barthel & Nils Brabandt made three documentaries that outline life as a Jew in a modern Germany.

Yiddishland – Jewishness in the 21st century (30min)
The film features people who were the youngest generation to contribute to the renaissance of Jewish-German musical culture: Sasha Lurje, Yeva Lapsker, Sanne Möricke and Craig Judelman. Their migrant history, their life in Germany and their approach to Judaism are told and juxtaposed in interviews. Yeva talks about the hardships of growing up as a “contingent refugee” in Germany in the 1990s; Sasha on her experiences as a teenager in a Jewish theatre group in Riga; Craig on the history that took his family from Latvia via South Africa to Seattle and finally to Berlin; and Sanne about the random sequence of events that made her, a non-Jew, one of the most sought-after artists in the contemporary klezmer scene.

A big thank you for the financial support goes to Dr. Thomas Feist, the Commissioner for Jewish Life in Saxony, Denkzeit Event, the Dr. Buhmann Foundation for Interreligious Understanding and the Ostsächsische Sparkasse Dresden.

Festival-Film – Ein Fest für Alle (40min)
In 2021, the festival documentary “Ein Fest für Alle” was created. There are many familiar faces to discover: For example, the artistic jack-of-all-trades Frank London, patron André Herzberg, Fidelgenie Craig Judelman, the political activists of Banda Comunale, Federal Cross of Merit Katharina Oguntoye, the singer Sasha Lurje or Alan “Yiddish Summer Weimar” Bern! All of them (and other guests) talk about their relationship to Jewish culture – about what makes a festival and how it brings people together.

ShUM and Beyond – The Deep Roots of Anti-Semitism
The documentary explores the phenomenon of anti-Semitism (and its predecessor, anti-Judaism) from the arrival of the first Jewish families in Northern Europe to the present day. To return to the roots, the ensemble Lucidarium plays songs that date back to the time of the first major massacres in northern Europe – the decimation of the Jewish communities of Speyer, Worms and Mainz in 1096, which were wiped out by a group of Christian crusaders on their way to Jerusalem. The consequences of hate speech are illustrated by performing some of the best-known medieval crusade songs (full of anti-Judaic language) side by side with the Piyyutim (songs written in Hebrew) lamenting the destruction by the Crusaders. The concept of hate speech and its consequences are further explored in interviews with Jews (but not only) of all ages, in which they talk about their experiences with micro- and macro-aggressions and their impact on their daily lives.

Funded by the Fonds Kulturgemeinschaften of the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media of the Fonds Neustart Kultur.
The event is free of charge – we would appreciate a donation.
