SCORE OF THE BODY

Noa Eshkol (1924–2007), an Israeli dancer, choreographer and artist of Ukrainian-Jewish origin, developed an analytical, geometric movement notation that recorded dance like a musical score. In her work SCORE OF THE BODY, Katja Erfurth engages with Eshkol’s artistic journey, explores her choreographic principles and connects them with her own dance practice.

A student of Gret Palucca, Katja Erfurth has spent many years exploring dance history, particularly Mary Wigman and her school in Dresden. From there, a path leads to Tile Rössler, also known as Tehila Ressler, who was forced to leave the Palucca School and Germany as a Jewish woman in 1933 and later taught in Tel Aviv. She forms the link to Noa Eshkol. Eshkol further developed the origins of Ausdruckstanz, driven by an uncompromising interest in recording dance through a highly complex notation system and, conversely, in following that system through analysis and reflection.
