Input & Diskussion with Lea Wohl von Haselberg

“Self-worth, desire for normalcy, symbolic politics? Jewish cultural events in the German context.”

Jewish cultural events currently take place in a field of tension between mainstream societal desires and appropriations, as well as the longing for visibility and recognition. They occur amidst a more confident, louder diversity of Jewish life and a growing antisemitism. Additionally, in many areas of arts and culture, it is not entirely clear what the label “Jewish” signifies, making the corresponding attribution a matter of politics, as well as the question of who is allowed to speak as Jewish or not in the German cultural landscape. It is a difficult terrain from which many withdraw – and yet it is precisely art, as Sasha Marianna Salzmann recently formulated, that could unlearn the either-or mentality.
